Dear Ramona,

Last month was for Moms and this month is for Dads. I've often wondered why Mother's Day came before Father's Day. I think Parent's Day would have made more sense.

This month, I give you a tribute to my dad--just a little story about how my Dad always paved the way for me to be open to new things and enjoy life as it comes. I hope you can relate.

Snowman
Winter was really cold that year. At least for me it was. I was born in the North, but Southern blood pumped through my veins even when I was a little girl. The mere suggestion of going out and "playing in the snow" was always a bad idea.

That particular morning was no different. It was early morning when I awoke to see that the night had brought a new blanket of snow. Being just a little girl with little girl thoughts, I meandered through the house thinking that it's going to be another playing inside day. "Let's see," I thought. "will I play with my dolls today? or will I play house?" In my mind these were great choices, and that was just what I was gonna do--play inside.

Dad had other ideas. He bounded out of bed and grabbed me up in his arms and said excitedly. "Look Mona, a whole new batch of snow." "What a wonderful day to build a snowman." Well, you can imagine my thoughts about that. I did not want to get the slightest bit cold, and I definitely didn't want to go out and build a snowman. Of course, I told Dad just that. I said, "I just can't go out in that cold. I'll freeze to death", as I started to pout.

Dad was disappointed. Even so, he sat me on his lap for a moment and just began talking. He said, "I understand." "I want you to see how wonderful the snow can be." "How it can be shaped and molded into a big snowman." I still was not convinced. Then Dad did it. He sat me down in front of the sliding glass doors, put on his warmest clothes and said to me, "You sit right here and watch."

With wide eyes and an even wider smile, I watched as my Dad went out into the snow and built the biggest, best snowman I had ever seen. With each new movement in the snow, he waved at me through that sliding glass door, smiling and molding that wonderful snowman, just for me. That day he showed how much he loved me. He stood there creating a new world for me, a world out of the comfort zone that I so enjoyed.

As the snowman came alive, my excitement bubbled. Without even so much as a coat, I threw open the sliding glass doors and ran into my Dad's loving arms. That day Dad helped me to understand just how much he loved me. And he told me that God loved me that much and more. That God created the heavens and the earth. Then He created each one of us. Each day, He goes before us and creates a new world for us to open the sliding glass door and run into with bubbling excitement.

Thanks Dad!
